Project management competency assessment case studies

Case study 1: A global, CMM level 5 IT service provider with an Indian presence of 5000 people

A global, multi-national company having a presence in India were planning to move higher up in the value chain in their service offerings. They are a matured organization assessed at CMMi Level 5 and were executing projects in the Time & Material model comfortably. Their projects  predominantly involved design, coding and testing phases. This landscape was to change due to their business decision of biding for higher end projects and would involve more end-to-end fixed price projects that include requirements engineering and architecture also. Hence, they wanted to get an assessment of how geared up was their delivery team to deliver higher-end projects. This assessment was intended to further design a customised competency development program.

It is at this juncture that they invited ACE to conduct project management competency assessment and the process that ACE followed for delivering this assessment is shown in the diagram below:

Project management competency assessment process

The project management competency assessment process first involved mapping the competency areas and levels to the new delivery capability target for higher end projects. Assessment methods were then designed to assess current competency levels and assessments were conducted. Then gap between the current competency level and target competency level was identified and this gap was used to design competency development programs that included training.
